1 – CHANGES IN TEACHING METHODS: THE ASSETS OF TOMORROW

After spending the last year coping with the public health crisis, training organisations have had to rethink the way they work to adapt their teaching to the restrictions imposed upon them, without neglecting the importance of student life, but while also trying to stay in step with the expectations of the companies that partner their training.  A raft of human, technological and economic challenges that Loire’s higher education institutions have more than risen to.

Teaching revisited

Even if the ISTP had already invented FOADs (open distance training) 20 years ago to meet the demand for continuing in-service training and emlyon has had a Learning Hub accessible from anywhere in the world for a few years now, not all the institutions were familiar with the digital technologies that had to be hurriedly integrated into their teaching programmes when the first lockdown came.

It took a huge investment, in both human and financial terms, to set up quality distance learning so that students could start following their courses again in a safe and practical way. Each institution, according to the profile of its learners, rapidly adapted to the constraints of cyberteaching and learning by providing digital tools (intranet, platforms, software) and specific training in their use.

Students under pressure

Student life is a period between the teenage years and adult life during which meetings, experiences and exchanges shared with others forge the social and economic actors of tomorrow. Deprived of a large part of their student life, some students find themselves in a state of psychological and financial distress.

Once again, the higher education institutions have been extremely responsive and shown a great deal of initiative in their efforts to better support learners.  For ESADSE, giving priority to its students to fill the jobs the generated by the 12th Biennale de Design was one obvious measure, a way of supporting those who are struggling financially.  The emlyon foundation, for its part, released €408K for an exceptional emergency fund to help out 467 students who found themselves in difficulties; healthcare teams have also been mobilised to provide psychological support. The ISTP and the IRUP have placed the emphasis on proximity: stepping up their monitoring of students, being reachable and maintaining regular contact by phone, part of the essential role tutors can play as they help their students to make their way through their courses.

Communication reinvented

As group gatherings have been virtually impossible for the last year, training organisations have not been able to organise their usual events, information sessions and ceremonies. Difficult under such conditions to recruit next year’s intake, to inform or to present certificates.

But again, solutions have been found: video conferencing, Facebook Live and newsletters have been used to maintain regular contact. As for the matter of recruiting students, in the absence of student fairs, this has been organised with Web information campaigns and virtual Open Days.

As for graduation ceremonies, the IRUP became a pioneer when it organised the first 100% digital graduation ceremony on 5 February 2021: the event organised with the participation of TL7, allowed 270 graduates to be honoured live on the IRUP’s YouTube channel – and it chalked up 1700 post-event views.
